Dear Mary Alice

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write to us an Animals Asia
regarding this disgusting website.  This is a video clip
which is very similar to one we have seen many times in recent weeks.
The woman in the original Chinese clip has been
identified and found and the person who shot the video has issued a
public apology in the Chinese newspapers. There are no animal welfare
laws covering domestic animals in China, so neither the woman nor the
cameramen is subject to prosecution or punishment. We understand,
however, that she has been hounded from her job and has had to
disconnect her phone and email and leave her home because of public outcry.

The photos you have sent, however, seem to be different ones, with a
different woman and different location.

Unfortunately, the Internet is full of this kind of video, called Crush
videos, depicting animals being killed in this way. It has been going on
for a long time. However, there are laws worldwide governing the
internet, and there are a couple of things that we can do here.

First of all please file a complaint at the following Web site:
www.ifccfbi.gov. This is a reporting centre Web site set up by the
Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) for Internet fraud and other
forms of Internet crime.

In addition, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has set up a
similar website. For more information please visit:
_http://www.h4ha.org/stopcruelty/index.html_   and you can follow
through to lodge a complaint with them.  The really unfortunate thing
here is that all these actions take time, and legislation does not get
passed overnight, as you undoubtedly know.  However, the more concerned
people who complain about these sites the more quickly - hopefully -
something can be done.

As one of our valued supporters, I know that you are aware that Animals
Asia is very concerned about all animal cruelty, but we are a very small
organisation, with limited financial resources, and much as
we would love to get involved in every issue, we just can't afford to do
it. We are committed to rescuing the Moon Bears by the year 2008, and to
relieving the suffering of dogs and cats in the meat and fur markets and
we can't afford to divert our limited resources into other areas. This
is why we have researched other organisations such as the ones I gave
you, to which we can direct people like yourself.

I do hope that this information is helpful.  It is so distressing to
have to see all this cruelty - believe
me, I know, because I'm subjected to it all day every day - and I
sympathise with your feelings. If we all work together we hope that we
can look forward to a world where all living things are respected.

With kind regards and sincere good wishes

Ann
